“Mabel, are you sure you’re up to opening this portal for Owen?” Rodric asked.

“Time moves slower in Ynys Afallon, Councilman Amherst, but it takes only a moment for something to go wrong,” Owen said, pacing in front of the portal mirror. It had been hours in Owen’s home world, anything could have happened to Elise by now.

The three of them ported to Mabel’s London flat so Owen could return to Ynys Afallon and hopefully find Elise. His heart heavy in his chest, Owen hoped with all his being that Elise yet lived to shine light upon his life. The queen would honor the Destined One bond. Owen was sure of it. Still, the question remained, did Elise tell the queen? It wasn’t like he encouraged Elise to hope for a bonding. He had discouraged her. If anything happened to her…

“I’m fine, Rodric. Owen, get out of the way and stop pacing. I can’t concentrate,” Mabel complained, pushing hair back from her face with one hand. “When you get there, inform the queen that I will be bonding with my Destined One in the near future. I won’t be returning to Ynys Afallon.”

“You can invite the queen to our ceremony,” Rodric suggested. “Now that the lycans have outed the Fae, we should discuss treaties and our future friendship as we face this crisis her nephew has brought upon us.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll brief the queen on how things are here on Earth. Don’t forget to stand ready next week, Mabel.”

She nodded, faced the mirror, and lifted her hands as words of magic fell from her lips. The mirror began to glow, and then with a flash of light, the image changed from Mabel’s reflection to a beautiful garden under a midnight moon.

“Merry meet and merry part, Owen,” Mabel said.

“And merry meet, again,” Owen answered. “Take good care of her, Rodric. Mabel, I…”

“Just go,” she said.

Owen nodded and stepped through the portal. Another flash of light, and the portal was gone as if it never existed. Owen stood in the very center of the garden, surrounded by Fairy’s Breath flowers. The moon illuminated the garden in a cool glow.

Owen began to run. He must find Elise.
